JAMIE WEAVER

Originally from Kentucky, I started playing trumpet in fifth grade in the tiny southern town of Monticello, KY. I didn’t have a clue what I was doing (because I didn’t practice as much as I should have), but I really enjoyed the time our little band spent in the dark and moldy basement beneath the “stage” that was located at one end of the gym.

My family and I moved back to Richmond, KY in the middle of my sixth grade year and I was fortunate to be able to continue playing trumpet there (as long as I was willing to miss PE class to do so). I eventually graduated from Madison Central High School where I was Drum Major for three years. I’m still convinced I was made Drum Major because I couldn’t march and play at the same time (see my earlier comment about not practicing enough).

While my high school band director, David Epperson, was very influential for me, it was a senior named Joan Deaton who had the greatest impact on me my freshman year. She made a point to meet me on the first day of band camp, carry my trumpet and water jug from the car to the band room, and tell me that she would be around if I needed anything. She changed the way I looked at leadership. She took care of me - all the seniors of that band took care of each of us.

I continued my music studies at the University of Kentucky where I was Drum Major for four years and continued not to practice nearly enough (just read my jury sheets). I’m not sure I was in love with making music, I was in love with teaching and leading - I just used music as the vehicle because that’s what I knew best.

I have been very fortunate to have amazing examples of servant leadership in my life and all I’ve ever wanted to be is kind to people, take care of them the way I was taken care of, and help others focus on taking care of others, too.

A few years ago, I decided to get a Masters Degree in Non Profit Administration from LSU Shreveport because I just wanted to expand my help and care taking to booster groups and other non profits that are in the business of taking care of people.

Now retired after spending the last 30 years in the classroom (Jessamine County, KY; The Woodlands, TX; Groesbeck, TX; Lewisville, TX; and Frisco, TX) I’m excited to go help more people in more places doing more things.
